Al Gilbert photographs now showing at Miles Nadal Community Centre
Ontario Jewish Archives

Launched in June, 2009, at the Beth Tzedec Congregation, the exhibit honours Toronto photographer Al Gilbert for his contribution to the community as well as his recent donation of 82 photographs to the OJA. Al is viewed by many as one of the greatest portrait photographers in Canada. In addition to being named a fellow of the photographic societies of Canada, the U.S. and Britain, Al was awarded the Order of Canada, and in 2007, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Professional Photographers of America.

In December, 2009 the exhibit moved from Beth Tzedec Congregation to the Miles Nadel Community Centre. This Spring it will move to the Market Gallery in downtown Toronto.

“A Glimpse at Greatness: The Portraiture of Al Gilbert,” features a small display of his father Nathan’s photographs as well as 30 of Al’s award-winning portraits. Individuals picured in the exhibit include: Murray Koffler, Frank Sinatra, David Ben Gurion, Oscar Peterson, Liona Boyd, Prime Minister Diefenbaker, and Wayne & Shuster. Please enjoy this opportunity to marvel at the work of one of Canada's premier portrait photographers.

This exhibition was made possible due to the generous financial support of Joey and Toby Tanenbaum.
